A new era in cruising begins today at Port Canaveral. Royal Caribbean International’s 160,000-ton Freedom of the Seas is scheduled to arrive at the Brevard County seaport this morning to begin seven-night Caribbean sailings.

Royal Caribbean says Freedom, which debuted in June 2006 and can carry more than 3,600 passengers, is the largest cruise ship at sea. Its features include:

– More than 10 restaurants;
– 16 bars and lounges;
– a surf simulator;
– a water park;
– an ice-staking rink.

It is the first of four new ultrasized cruise ships scheduled to arrive at Port Canaveral in the coming months.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Dream will arrive later this year, followed by the Disney Cruise Line’s Dream in 2011 and Fantasy in 2012.
